PMU Mares - The Abuse Continues…

PMU stands for Pregnant Mare Urine.  It is a key ingredient in a medication called Premarin.  When we first heard about this process and the abuse that PMU mares have to endure, we were completely shocked that this can occur in this day and age.  Well not only does it occur but it is still growing.  The conditions that these mares have to endure are heart breaking. Our History

Melajim and Chardonnay were our first rescues.

Melajim

Melajim won his last thoroughbred race when he was 3 years old, he was won in a purse by a wealthy horse racer, but they did not care for him, as they had many other much more expensive horses.  Monika learned of Melajim from her veterinarian.

He told her that they were going to send him to the slaughter, but she stepped in just in time to rescue him.  He had a disease in his tendons, when she first got him he needed daily shots.  Monika contacted the owners and saved her first fur baby.  She nursed him back to health.  She continued on, by riding him, competing and winning many ribbons in horse show jumping.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay was our first rescue in California, she is a beautiful 4 year old palomino, the color of a lovely glass of Chardonnay!  She has become our baby and our pride and joy.  Her story goes like this...

Chardonnay had a fracture in her rear left foot.  We found her on the internet and the people who had her told use she was going to slaughter in the next few days if no one came to take her.  Of course we jumped in the car almost in the middle of the night and drove 5 hours to get her.  She was for sale for $400, they would get about the same for her at the slaughterhouse.

When we first saw her on the internet, we knew we had so save her and we fell in love with her.  At first they told us she just had a bad hoof. We could see upon looking at her that her foot was very swollen, but she moved well on it; it didn’t seem to hamper her.  Of course we put her in our rented trailer and brought her to a boarding stable near our house.

We soon had a vet come and see her.  They did a 360 degree x-ray of her foot and told us it was actually fractured and that she could never be ridden.   They suggested about a $10,000 surgery that “would probably” help her.  Although she would still have limited mobility.   We thought about it for a long time, that is a lot of money that we naturally did not have, we didn’t even know where to get it either.  Riding her was never a high priority for us, just her well being and not being in any pain were our first priorities.  We talked to a lot of experts and got several veterinary opinions.

Finally we got some advise that made the most sense; she is only two years old and she is still growing, give her as much glucosemine as we can and check her every 6 months.  That is what we did and she got better all the time- we also believe in miracles (Horses with Wings if you will) we have had her in training, she is fully broke and very ridable- no matter what the experts said.

Chardonnay and several more babies are our inspiration and our reason for starting this organization that we have been supporting with our own personal funds for the past several years.

The first horse we ever rescued was in 1985, his name was Melahim, we was a beautiful thourogh bread.  He was at the slaughter when we rescued him.  He had been badly abused on the race tracks and only because he wasn’t good enough did they decide to kill him.  He was an angel and a very good horse, he and Monika won many jumping awards.

“Horses and dogs have been man’s most intimate and faithful companions since the dawn of history, but the horse has certainly been the most useful.   In sport, agriculture transport and warfare, the horse has contributed more to man’s pleasure, ambition and progress than any other animal.”

How we neglect these beautiful creatures it is so sad, how this can happen?
