Hemet Sheriff Department is investigating an alleged investor who stole tens of thousands of dollars from Villa Chardonnay, an accredited animal sanctuary. Posing as a former professional sports agent and investment group manager representing basketball greats such as Magic Johnson Russell Westbrook and Jason Kidd, Ron Allen offered to provide funding for Villa Chardonnay’s forever Hemet home.
Nitro Active, the great great grandson of Secretariat, was headed to a slaughterhouse just three months after his last race on December 16, 2011 at Hollywood Park Racetrack. After three wins and earning nearly $200,000 in his career, Nitro Active is no longer able to race.
Villa Chardonnay, Horses with Wings sanctuary, which has been rescuing animals for more than a decade, is looking for a little rescue itself. The animal sanctuary near Hemet sent out a call for donations after one of its dogs was attacked by a coyote Wednesday.
The horse’s name is Nitro Active. He was bred for speed. This great-great-grandson of the legendary Secretariat had won nearly $200,000 in prize money at tracks around Southern California. It had been a modestly successful racing career, but by December of last year it was over.
Fifteen years ago, Monika Kerber rescued a pregnant Palomino mare who was about to be sent to a slaughterhouse because of a fractured foot, which was later healed. She named the mare and her offspring, Chardonnay and Chablis, after sweet white wines and gave them a home.
